Maximus is the great-grandfather of Max from the 1910's. He, along with Sameth, win a trip to Egypt where they are tasked with retrieving The Devil's Toybox for Anton Papierwaite. He and Sameth succeed, and fight off Papierwaite's betrayal. Later, they accidentally get killed by a passing curse in their basement, where Sam and Max find them years later. The only difference between Maximus and his great-grandson, Max, is that Maximus wears clothes, while Max does not.
Unlike his great-grandson, who has a job of sorts, Maximus doesn't seem to do anything other than sneaking into theaters and stealing ketchup bags from restaurants, though he claims he and Sameth are both "untrained police" and "untrained train conductors".
It's worth to notice, that Maximus didn't had his hat in the original seasonal game, but in Remastered, he got a hat like the one from the concept art. Another thing is that he wears light brown pants that haven't been shown on the concept art.

Sameth is Maximus' best friend, and they shared a friendship similar to their great-grandsons, Sam and Max.

Trivia
- Considering the fact that, when transformed into a cow, he is able to produce milk, Maximus may be trans.
- Similar to his grandson, it is heavily implied that Maximus has schizophrenia, as when viewing the world in Maximus Vision, multiple hallucinations can be seen. As they are never mentioned nor joked about, this implies their existence is not due to the fact he is using the Toys of Power, but because he has a disorder that causes hallucinations, like schizophrenia.
- In the remaster of Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse, Maximus is seen wearing a hat that his original model did not have.
- This was a feature in his original concept art that was omitted from the original game but brought back for the remaster, similar to Jurgen's nipple keyring.
- Maximus' Hat is based off of Newsboy Caps, they were popular in Europe and North America in the early 20th century among both boys and adult men.
